Community news

Our Mother General, Sr Marie Claude, accompanied by Sr Anne Marie, came for a brief stay in early December. The Community Retreat was led by Fr Richard Finn OP, and greatly appreciated by the Sisters. Over the Christmas period we welcomed many friends to join us for meals in the Refectory; in particular it was good to see Bishop Michael, who presided at our Mass on the Feast of St Stephen.

Eaglesfield Paddle schoolTwo schools visited us during Advent - Eaglesfield Paddle from Cockermouth and St Patrick’s, Walton-le-Dale.

Both schools shared lively question and answer sessions with the Sisters. Eaglesfield Paddle gave a dramatic presentation about the Second World War, while St Patrick’s sang carols for the patients and then led a wonderful Evening Prayer for us in the Chapel. Very many thanks to them both.

Two of the Sisters went to see Allithwaite’s School’s Nativity Play and were very impressed by the quality of the production and the performances.

Christmas events included a nativity play
by the Montessori School, carols from Allithwaite School Choir and a magic show from Mr Fitchett in Marymount. Santa Claus of course paid his usual visit to see both the patients and the children and grandchildren of our staff on 23rd December.
And Christmas Eve just wouldn’t be the same without carols from the Flookburgh Silver Band ! Michael came to the Guest House to play for us round the fire during Christmas week. Compline in the hall

Many thanks to all of these for making our celebrations so special.

Our Christmas and New Year guests joined in both celebrating and praying with gusto - Compline around the fire being a favourite as always.

The Sisters joined Elizabeth McConnell in thanking all our staff with a festive afternoon tea or supper around the fire on 21st January.

Guest House and other Events

Fr Dixie visited Newcastle in early December for an Advent Day of Reflection entitled ‘Talking the Gospel into Life’ for priests, religious and lay people of the Diocese.

On 3rd January we were joined by the staff and governors of two schools for an INSET day -
Our Lady of Lourdes, Carnforth and St Teresa’s, Preston.
Some of the St Teresa’s group were also able to stay with us overnight. Sr Margaret spoke on the themes of ‘What difference does Jesus make?’, while in the afternoon, one school heard Fr Dixie speak on ‘Who is Jesus?’ and the other explored the practice of prayer with Fr Frank Osman and Sr Margaret.

The January Health and Salvation week on the theme of ‘Compassion and Creativity’ was attended by many old friends and some new. Speakers included Fr Michael Fitzsimons on creative responses to conflict, Mary Moore on creative change in the NHS, Lynne Alexander on writing with cancer patients and Vicky Biggs, who talked about her use of storytelling with childen in Palestine. Requiescat in Pace

Mr Roy Fox died on 20th December. He was a regular visitor over the years to the Guest House and Nursing Home and had been resident with us for a few weeks when he died. May he rest in peace.
